Molluscum contagiosum is a cutaneous infection caused by a virus. It causes small balls in the skin of children and, less often, in adults, usually without causing symptoms. The lesions may regress spontaneously in a few months, but it is better to treat them, by the risk of transmission to other people or even by inoculation elsewhere in one’s own skin.
The treatment is done by the dermatologist, through curettage, cryotherapy (liquid nitrogen spray), or application of local products, at home or in the office.
When the lesions are removed in the office with curettage, an anesthetic ointment is applied before, which makes the procedure much faster and more tranquil, especially for children.
